Saint Jerome church in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx began as a predominantly Irish parish. By the 1960s many Puerto Ricans had moved into the neighborhood, and then, by 2000 many Mexican families began to find a home here. Saint Jerome church is now largely Mexican. On the side entrance along East 138th St. an Aztec figure has been added to the ornamentation of the church.

One thing about the Catholic Church is that it will allow cultural symbols outside of the church and its beliefs to be used by various ethnic groups. If you were to completely understand the culture of the Aztecs, particularly when the Spanish arrived, this would be a very surprising juxtaposition.
