It’s 1988, and, a couple years into the Deuce book. I just sold my car and, decided to go hyper-local, and take the subway into Times Square and 42nd St., almosr every night, often until sunrise until it was gone by 1994.
Obviously i can shoot only one way, my own, and, that means participation, closeness and never a candid shot, which is good since you get so many images of the place as raw, dangerous, or dead, and middle-class artists shooting candidly with telephoto lensess, or stretching the garbage and rawness, like little Jacob Riis’ and never mixing into the Life of the street, and the Life is what the Deuce and Times Square used to be about. So no one really penetrated the show and the sleaze, let alone doing it every night for a very long time. I don’t shoot us vs. them, just us.
