By the mid-1990s most of the large homeless camps began to disappear. Not the homeless, but this style of sprain shelter. It got revived again after Covid, but never reached the levels as seen in the late 80s into the 1990s a comment site would be walking the length of the port Authority bus terminal through a C of boxes where people were living. I did a book on 42nd St. in Times Square in the 1980s and one guy in particular stood out because every night he would bring a mattress into the middle of Times Square and sleep, unaware, presumably of his fantastic view.

This location was known for its dynamite views and open territory where one could build quite a complex. These folks stuck it out to the very end as the sweeps continued.
