People – contact, amongst folks, anything can happen. People who have suffered from other people find places, and, today, medications for what ails them. Many versions exist simultaneously of the name origins of the mountains here – the most popular one is that it’s a site of profound violence, where a lone survivor ended her life, while other stories say it was a site for vision questing, becoming lost in the translation and interperted as “crazy” by non-natives.
The Crazies, without its limited human history are a bit off, and isolated in themselves – being an entirely independent mountain range surrounded by high desert plains.
Isolated geograpahy, particularly badlands with no use-value, are visited temporarily either to get through them, or discover their qualities – isolation, emptiness and beauty. In the case of the Crazies, the domonant legend is a woman, the lone survivor, in her family’s massacre, wanders off into the wilderness.
Ever been alone, isolated in a wilderness mountain range? When i took this picture, in 1989, i wasn’t looking to flee peope or finding some good isolation, but i would six years later, after too much, for myself, contact wif the “socially acceptable” crazies in the world of A & E.
