In 2009 Saint Hyacinth was shut down. It was one of 30 ethnic churches in Cleveland that were closed, between 2009 and 2010, many of the churches were Polish. The statute of Saint Hyacinth is set above the altar. If you notice Saint Hyacinth’s hands are always full.
The main group of Polish immigrants was located around East 55th and Broadway, close St. Stanislaus, a very large church, but there were many small enclaves of Poles on the east side – Josophatt, Casimir and Hyacinth – existed, and reflected the desire to work in an industry close to your home and church, and, before you know it, you have an authetic ethnic neighborhood, mostly because they liked to live close to where they worked, and stores, churches and more homes followed.
Hyacinth had a special relationship to peorogi.
