The 140 Tires Center lasted until 2015 on Fordham Road in the University Heights section of the Bronx, replaced by a new apartment building, and part of a Bronx building boom that won’t quit. The sign was auctioned at Sotheby’s, fetching 1.2 million dollars as an example of American abstract outsider art from the 1940s.
The work of art was done by the reclusive artist, TwoShoes, who, coincidentally lives directly across the street.
