In 2020 the cross atop St. Michael’s School seems ready to topple, which is a bad sign, in the sense that, the structure had two possibilities for the future – demolition or rehabilitation. The school has been sitting empty for many years and the parish did not have enough money to maintain the property. However, the neighborhood is at the edge of Tremont which became completely gentrified, and so, there is a market for rehabbing these properties into retail and housing which are usually very much on the high end.
That has happened before in Tremont and is ongoing, so it’s nothing new, and, indeed, the property is being re-developed into luxury housing, without the cross, i presume.
