In the art and entertainment industries, take for, instance, the institution of art, where art works are stored, categorized and shown by the highly functional well-endowed, highly educated and absurdly revered institutions of art, as the vault for the highest works of culture ever accomplished by sometimes dysfunctional, always transactional,typically phony and basically soulless artists, many of whom can only function and find a place for themselves, in the art world. I guess i let that slip, i should learn to have opinions.
When people say “art world” as if it’s one word, it reinforces the idea of an institution and place that is a world unto itself, separate, but equal, to the actual world, or, as Mr. Golub said tome, “It’s a garden wall.” I should suffer from saying that?
It makes sense, it’s in art and entertainment, where virtual, intensely unproven subjectivities, and the unreal are standards. Curiously, so, too, with extreme right-wing social media groups like Info Wars or Q-Anon that deconstruct and play with things and are often pure performance art, while speaking of the hegemony of the media, or, in their terms, fake news.
