DUNCOMB ARCHES, BRONX RIVER
At the Gun Hill Road Bridge, there has been a river crossing since 1693, originally known as Wiliams-bridge. Here the Bronx River bends sharply, left, then right and runs along Duncomb Road, before flowing through the Arches, in the the last oxbow formations on the river.
The Arches form a tunnel made by the twin arched bridges supporting the north and south lanes of Bronx Boulevard, and a third single arched bridge, that supports the north and south lanes of the Bronx River Parkway. Underneath all three bridges is a pedestrian walkway, next to the river. Leaving the tunnel, the river bends sharply again, straightening once more, heading south, according, not to geolo-gy, geography, and river erosion, but the building of the Bronx and its infrastructure.
