A sign at the Federal Steel & Wire Plant in the Flats, Clevelnd. Originally it was the Upson Nut & Bolt Company, bought by Republic Steel, that made nuts and bolts from scratch, including making its own metals, with ore docks and furnaces.
The plant closed in 1978 and was torn down in 1995. It’s extremely rare to have steelmills and blast purposes within city limits of a large urban area anymore. Has a major integrated steel mill that is operational in the center of the city, and, this one, was literally situated on the river where downtown Cleveland is located.
